Pair of polychrome carved wood wall brackets with cherub heads and putti, 18th century
Articles
Pair of polychrome and gilded carved wooden wall brackets*, decorated with two cherub heads surrounded by foliage and ears of wheat, from the 18th century.
These consoles are in good overall condition, in their original state. Superb quality.
Note: splits in the wood halfway up, some damage and missing wood especially at the edges of the tray and under the angel heads, wear to the polychromy and gilding, wear from age, look carefully at the photos (see red arrows).
*Called "wall brackets," these brackets are often placed against wood paneling, a pier glass, or between two windows or doors. Under Napoleon III, brackets with elaborate plant motifs saw a revival. (excerpt from the Larousse Dictionary of Antiques and Secondhand Goods).
